Chainmail Crafting: Brass Loose Rings with Dome Rivets 9mm

Historical Context and the Golden Gleam of Battle

The use of brass and bronze in chainmail dates back to antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Historically, brass rings were very often woven into iron chainmail shirts (hauberks) to form highly decorative borders on the sleeves, neck, or bottom hem. This contrasting golden detail gave the armour a highly prestigious appearance, clearly showcased the wealth and social status of its wearer, and beautifully broke up the otherwise grey expanse of iron links.

Usage and Assembly Instructions

The rings are designed for manual weaving, most commonly using the classic European 4-in-1 pattern. To join them securely, you will absolutely need a pair of special riveting pliers. The process involves threading the ring through the adjacent links, inserting the included brass rivet into the overlapping punched holes, and firmly crimping it with the pliers to form a strong, hemispherical dome head. From this generous pack, you can comfortably create extensive brass edgings, unique pieces of jewellery, or meticulously mend damaged sections of historical armour.

Safety Guidelines

From a safety perspective, this product is intended primarily for decorative purposes, costume cosplay, or LARP. It is crucial to remember that brass is significantly softer than mild steel. Armour woven entirely from these brass rings is not suitable for full-contact historical fencing, such as HEMA, buhurt, or Battle of the Nations. Under heavy strikes, the soft brass rings would likely tear and fail to provide adequate physical protection.

Care and Maintenance

As a natural material, brass oxidises when exposed to air and will develop a characteristic matte patina over time. If you wish to maintain its original bright golden shine, we recommend occasionally polishing the rings with special brass polishing wadding or a soft cloth treated with metal polishing paste. Always store the product in a dry environment to prevent excessive tarnishing.

Our Recommendations for You

Alongside this ring set, we highly recommend purchasing a suitable pair of riveting pliers for smooth assembly, as well as a padded garment (gambeson), which forms the essential functional and comfortable base layer underneath any chainmail armour to prevent chafing and distribute weight.
