Historical Context and Practical Usage

Footwear with a strap across the instep and decorative cut-outs appeared in various forms as early as the Late Middle Ages, but experienced a massive boom primarily in the Renaissance and early modern period (16th and 17th centuries). Cut-outs (so-called slashing) were a huge fashion trend at the time, not only on clothing but also on footwear. They served for ventilation and, above all, to show off the expensive coloured fabrics or stockings underneath, allowing the wearer to display their wealth. Today, these shoes are perfectly suited for Renaissance reenactment, LARP, or as a highly stylish and comfortable accessory for your cosplay.

Leather Footwear Care

Like all honest leather footwear, these shoes require regular care to keep them looking beautiful for a long time. They are treated with beeswax straight from the workshop. We recommend that you clean them of coarse dirt with a damp cloth after each wear and regularly lubricate the leather with a high-quality leather balm. The balm softens the natural material, protects it from drying out, and provides a light waterproof coating. If you do not have a special balm, classic black shoe polish will serve excellently, allowing you to easily disguise minor scuffs and scratches caused by normal outdoor wear.

Safety Warnings and What to Avoid

Although these shoes feature a practical patterned sole, you should always tread with appropriate caution on wet cobblestones, smooth stone, or in the mud. Strictly avoid soaking the shoes in deep puddles or heavy rain. If your shoes do get wet, never dry them near a direct heat source, such as a radiator, fireplace, or open fire. The leather could harden, crack, and be irreversibly destroyed. Always stuff them with old newspaper and let them dry very slowly at normal room temperature.

Choosing the Right Size and Custom Adjustments

The footwear is available in standard European (EU) sizes. If the standard sizes do not suit you, you can choose the custom-made option. In this case, simply fill in the required measurement chart for your foot carefully after completing your order. If you wear special orthopaedic insoles, we recommend sending them to us physically by post. The experienced shoemaker will build them exactly into the shoes so that you can enjoy every historical event to the fullest without foot pain.
