• Golden Scales: In her left hand, she holds raised scales, on which she impartially weighs evidence and arguments "for and against".
• Sword: In her right hand, she wields a golden sword, symbolizing power, authority, and the ability to enforce the law or punish injustice.
• Blindfold: The golden blindfold signifies impartiality – justice does not look at the origin, wealth, or power of the accused.
• Book and Snake: The statue stands on a book (code of law), signifying a firm foundation in the law, and tramples a snake, symbolizing evil and corruption.

Historical Insight: From Themis to Justitia

The figure we know today as Lady Justice has roots in ancient mythology. The Roman goddess Iustitia is often identified with the Greek Titaness Themis, who represented divine order and law, and her daughter Dike, who oversaw human justice. Interestingly, original ancient depictions did not have a blindfold. The blindfold as a symbol of "blind justice" (uninfluenceable by external impressions) only began to appear commonly in the Renaissance.
