Historical Context and the Staunton Design

When modern competitive chess and organized tournaments began to take shape in the mid-19th century, the need to standardize the shape of chess pieces arose. Players from different parts of Europe were used to varying designs, which led to many misunderstandings. Therefore, in 1849, Nathaniel Cook patented a new, elegant, and highly stable shape for the pieces, which was subsequently endorsed by the unofficial world champion of that time, Howard Staunton. The dark pieces are made of Indian Rosewood (also known as Sheesham), prized for its striking grain. The light, ivory-coloured pieces are crafted from Boxwood (Buxus), whose dense and hard wood allows for the carving of fine details, such as the mane of the knight.

Usage and Proper Wood Care

This set is designed for indoor play. To preserve its beauty for years to come, we advise you to follow a few basic rules. Wood is a living natural material that reacts to its environment. Wipe the chessboard and pieces only with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Strictly avoid using any chemical cleaners or wet wipes. Protect the wood from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which could cause the marquetry colours to fade. Do not leave the set near sources of radiant heat (radiators, fireplaces) to prevent the veneer from cracking or warping.

Safety Guidelines and Warnings

Although this is a board game, you must bear in mind that the pieces contain fine details and lead or iron weights in the base. If dropped on a hard floor (e.g., tiles), the wood can chip or shatter. The resulting splinters can be sharp. Also, keep the set out of the reach of toddlers and very small children, as there is a real choking hazard from swallowing smaller parts of the pieces. Under no circumstances should you throw the product, nor should you use it outdoors in damp environments.
