Black Musketeer Boots with “Butterfly” Spur Guard – 17th Century
Historical Construction: No Left or Right Distinction!
These boots are made according to original historical methods, which entails a specific feature that might surprise modern users: the boots have a symmetrical sole. In the 17th century, shoes were made on a so-called "straight last", meaning there was no distinction between the left and right boot. The boot adapted to the shape of the foot only through wear.
Important Assembly Note: From the factory, both boots may arrive with the instep protector (the "butterfly") fastened on the same side. Do not panic; you do not have two left boots! Because the sole is symmetrical, you simply need to unbuckle the butterfly straps on one boot and flip it to match the other foot. This way, you pair the boots for left and right yourself.
Functional Features for Riders
The boots are made of high-quality black cowhide. A dominant feature is the removable protector across the instep, historically often called a "butterfly". This served to protect expensive footwear from abrasion by stirrups while riding and also covered the spurs. The high cuff (approx. 65 cm / 25.6 inches total height) protects the knees but can be folded down for a more relaxed look if needed.

Safety and Care
The boots feature an authentic leather sole. They work great on grass, but can be slippery on tiles or parquet floors. For urban events, consider having a rubber sole applied. Treat the leather regularly with high-quality shoe polish to keep it supple and prevent cracking.
