A Glimpse into History

Hooded cloaks, also known as mantles or capes, were an essential part of the wardrobe in the Middle Ages and earlier eras. They were worn by all social classes—from peasants to nobility—as primary protection against cold, rain, and wind. They were fastened at the neck with simple ties or, as in this case, with ornate metal clasps (fibulae). These were not only practical but often a symbol of the owner's wealth and social status. The design of this particular fibula references the craftsmanship of Norse and Eastern European cultures of the Early Middle Ages.

The Wonder of Wool

For centuries, wool was the most prized material for outerwear, and for good reason. It provides insulation even when slightly damp, is naturally flame-retardant, and repels water to a certain degree. This is precisely why heavy wool cloaks were an invaluable companion for travellers, soldiers, and anyone who spent significant time outdoors.

Care Instructions

To ensure your cloak lasts as long as possible and retains its original beauty, please follow these care instructions:

  • Washing: Machine wash on a cold, gentle wool cycle only. Wash with similar colours to prevent any risk of colour bleeding.
  • Drying: Can be tumble dried on a very low heat setting. However, for best results, lay flat to air dry.
  • Ironing: If necessary, iron on a low heat (wool setting). This is often not required if the cloak is dried correctly.
