Black Cotton Tsuka-Ito Ribbon for Traditional Japanese Sword Handle Wrapping

Order Notice: The stated price is for 1 metre (approx. 3.28 feet) of length. We cut the ribbon from large rolls, so you determine the length yourself by the number of items in the basket. If you require, for example, 5 metres in one piece, put 5 pieces in the basket.

Historical Context and the Art of Tsukamaki

In the history of feudal Japan, the handle wrap (tsuka-ito) was not just an aesthetic matter; it had an absolutely critical function. The tightly pulled ribbon held the entire construction of the handle (tsuka) together, fixed the underlying ray skin (samegawa), and secured the decorative elements (menuki). At the same time, it acted as an excellent shock absorber during hard impacts of the blade and prevented the sword from slipping out of the bloody or sweaty hands of the samurai. To this day, the art of handle wrapping is a highly valued craft that requires patience and a steady hand.

How to Order Correctly and How Much Ribbon You Need

Recommended Usage: For wrapping the handle of one standard katana, approx. 5 metres (approx. 16.4 feet) of this ribbon is sufficient. For a shorter wakizashi, 3 to 4 metres are usually enough, and for a tanto dagger, about 2 metres.

Basic Guide to Creating a Tsuka Ito Wrap

Wrapping requires practice and constant tension. Here is a simplified guide on how to start:

  1. It is a good idea to temporarily attach the Menuki ornaments to the handle with a rubber band before the actual wrapping.
  2. Start at the guard (tsuba). The left end of the ribbon is crossed twice and placed to the right.
  3. The right end is crossed twice and placed to the left. Ensure the ribbon is constantly under very strong tension! Subsequently, the handle is turned, and the wrap is guided on the other side in the same way.
  4. The left end is crossed twice again and placed to the right.
  5. The right end is crossed twice again and placed to the left. The handle is then turned, and we continue wrapping, with the only difference being that this time we start from the right side.
  6. We continue wrapping in the same way, regularly alternating sides, and gradually weave in the prepared Menuki tightly.
  7. Finishing the wrap (the so-called maki-dome knot) at the pommel (kashira) requires a specific tying technique. We recommend you look up detailed diagrams and video tutorials on this final knot from specialized sources or communities focused on Japanese swords.

Proper Care and Safety Warnings

Keep the cotton wrap dry and protect it from excessive moisture to prevent its degradation. If the ribbon gets dirty, it can be gently wiped with a damp cloth, but avoid aggressive cleaning agents.

From a safety perspective, remember: If you use the sword for practical cutting practice (tameshigiri) or kata exercises, the wrap must be absolutely tight and must not shift on the handle. A loose wrap poses a serious safety risk, as the sword can easily slip out during a swing. If you are unsure about the firmness of your wrapping, entrust the sword to an experienced professional or use the weapon only as a decoration.
