A Brief History of Belt Pouches
In the Middle Ages, pockets as we know them today (sewn into clothing) were very rare. Men and women alike, therefore, carried their personal belongings in pouches or purses tied or hung from their belts. The belt was not just a practical item for holding up clothing but the "utility belt" of its time. Everything from a knife and a coin purse to small tools was carried on it. This leather pouch is based on typical designs that were common for centuries and served to keep valuables safe. An interesting fact: the term "cutpurse" originated from the ease with which a thief could cut such a purse from a person's belt.
How to Care for Your Pouch
- Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after use to remove dust and dirt.
- Never soak the pouch in water or machine wash it. If it gets wet, let it air dry at room temperature (never on a heater or in direct sunlight).
- To keep the leather supple and increase its resistance to moisture, treat it regularly with a leather balm or conditioner.
- When not in use, store it in a cool, dry place, ideally stuffed with paper to help it keep its shape.
- Protect it from extreme heat and prolonged direct sunlight, which can dry out the leather and cause it to crack.
Please Note: This is a handmade product from natural leather. Slight variations in colour, texture, or surface markings are natural and add to the unique and authentic character of each piece.
