Wooden Training Sword 82 cm | Medieval Waster

Designed for Drills, Not Destruction

It is crucial to understand the intended use of this sword. It is designed for solo drills, forms, shadow fencing, and light technical practice. It is not an indestructible bludgeon. Wood is a natural material with limited flexibility. If you strike it with full force against another wooden sword, a shield, or a tree, it will break. This is not a material defect, but physics. There is no warranty for breakage caused by impact. If you are looking for a nearly indestructible training weapon for full-contact sparring, I recommend checking out our polypropylene training swords.

Historical Context: What is a Waster?

You might think knights only trained with steel. Quite the opposite. Steel was expensive, required maintenance, and training with it carried a risk of injury even with blunt edges. Therefore, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, wooden swords called wasters were widely used. They allowed men-at-arms to drill techniques for hours without ruining their precious edges or exhausting their muscles with heavy steel. With this sword, you are holding a piece of genuine training tradition.

Care Instructions

To keep your sword smooth and strong for as long as possible, give it a little care:

  • Surface Protection: Wood is a natural material. Occasionally sand it down with fine grit paper (if splinters appear) and treat it with linseed oil or beeswax. This prevents drying out and cracking.
  • Storage: Do not leave the sword in direct sunlight, near heaters, or in damp basements. Extreme changes in temperature and humidity are harmful to wood.
  • Safety: Check the blade for cracks or sharp splinters before every practice session to prevent injury to yourself or others.
