In medieval cities, patricians were representatives of wealthy and long-settled families, who usually extorted city self-government from the monarch or noble and, at least initially, also fully controlled it. It was only in the late Middle Ages that they had to admit the participation of artisans and less well-off citizens, or even immigrants.
