Historical Context and Authentic Cut
The pattern of this garment is strictly based on archaeological finds dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries. Long dresses constructed primarily from rectangular and triangular fabric pieces are highly typical for this early medieval period. By using this ingenious method, our ancestors minimised the waste of precious hand-woven materials. In renowned historical sites such as Skjoldehamn, Birka, and Haithabu, textile fragments have been discovered that clearly show this specific tailoring technique. Both the front and back of the dress are made of rectangular panels. To give the hem sufficient width and a beautiful drape, so-called gores (wedge-shaped pieces) are inserted into the center and sides. For maximum arm mobility, a rectangular gusset is sewn in under the armpits. This makes it an absolutely authentic base layer for every proper Norse woman or shieldmaiden.
Material and Unique Details
The primary material is a highly robust and durable 100% cotton canvas, reminiscent of heavy sailcloth. Thanks to the fabric's heavier weight, the dress hangs beautifully and is ideal for milder and cooler weather conditions. The most striking feature of the dress is its decoration. The slit neckline, the sleeve cuffs, and the wide bottom hem are trimmed with a rich wine-red fabric. Furthermore, these contrasting areas are adorned along the edges with a hand-stitched whipstitch (cross-stitch) in a light, contrasting thread, giving the garment the true mark of honest craftsmanship. The dress also comes with a long fabric belt in the same wine-red colour, allowing you to elegantly cinch the waist to your figure. The neck slit can be worn open or historically fastened with your favourite brooch or fibula.
Care Instructions for Historical Clothing
To ensure your dress remains beautiful for as long as possible and retains its vibrant colours, we advise giving it special care. Because of the stark contrasting colours (natural off-white and dark wine red), it is absolutely crucial to wash the garment exclusively by hand in lukewarm water using a gentle detergent. If machine-washed, there is a high risk that the wine-red dye will bleed into the light canvas. After washing, gently squeeze out the water and line dry. Ironing is possible on a medium heat setting intended for cotton. Despite the tough material, avoid using a tumble dryer, as it could ruin the fabric's structure and the hand embroidery. Be cautious around the evening campfire—flying sparks can easily burn holes through natural cotton.
Recommended Accessories
To complete your Norse outfit, we highly recommend pairing this dress with a so-called apron dress (hangerock), which together forms the perfect historical ensemble of a Viking woman. It is also an excellent idea to accessorize with a quality leather belt featuring a brass buckle, historical leather shoes, and traditional tortoise brooches to fasten the apron. Please remember that the package includes only the canvas dress and the wine-red fabric belt. Any other equipment you see in the photographs (such as the apron, leather belts, seax knife, or jewellery) is not included in this offer and serves purely for your inspiration.
