Folding Renaissance Brass Ring Sundial and Pocket Compass
History and Function of the Ring Sundial
While classic sundials have served humanity since antiquity, the specific form of the universal ring dial flourished during the Renaissance in the 16th and 17th centuries. This era saw a tremendous intersection of the exact sciences with fine clockmaking and blacksmithing. These dials were especially popular among travellers because they did not require a magnetic compass to find true north. Operating the dial takes just four simple steps: First, unfold the inner ring so it sits at a right angle to the outer ring. Next, set the outer ring to the latitude of your current location (major cities are conveniently engraved on it). Then, move the sliding central bar with the small hole to the current month. Finally, suspend the instrument by its cord and turn it towards the sun until the beam of light passing through the hole strikes the inner ring with Roman numerals, which will then indicate the precise time.
Brass Care and Safe Handling
The instrument is crafted from brass alloys and steel components. To ensure it retains its beautiful golden lustre and does not oxidise (tarnish or turn green) due to humidity and perspiration, we recommend wiping it with a dry cloth after wearing it and occasionally polishing it with special wipes designed for non-ferrous metals. Exercise great care when manipulating the pivoting rings. Never bend or force the mechanism open with brute strength, as this could irreversibly damage the delicate pivot pins. Protect the sundial from dropping onto hard surfaces, which could warp the rings and prevent them from folding flat or functioning correctly.
