Roman Legionary Dagger Pugio with Ornate Brass Fitted Scabbard

The Ultimate Backup Weapon and Status Symbol

While the famous gladius sword served as the primary weapon, the pugio dagger was a Roman soldier's fallback option for close-quarters combat when there was no room to draw a sword. It was worn suspended from the military belt known as the cingulum militare. A typical feature is the broad, double-edged blade with a pronounced central ridge, which guaranteed excellent armour-piercing capabilities. This replica faithfully mirrors archaeological finds from the 1st century, a period when daggers and scabbards became a canvas for the artistic expression of skilled craftsmen. The golden brass fittings on the scabbard, which is equipped with four suspension rings, not only protected the weapon but also elegantly demonstrated the prestige of its bearer.

Safety Guidelines and Weapon Care

For safety reasons, please be explicitly aware that this is a decorative item entirely unsuitable for practical use such as contact fencing, martial arts training (HEMA), or man-to-man combat. Although the striking edge is approximately 1 mm (0.04 inches) thick, the product may have sharper sections, and careless or improper handling could easily lead to injury. Therefore, please consider it primarily as a theatrical prop or collector's display piece. To maintain its pristine historical appearance, it is strictly necessary to regularly clean the steel parts and conserve them with a thin layer of gun oil to prevent rust. The fine brass details on the scabbard can occasionally be carefully polished using special wadding for precious metals.

Our Recommendation

For the perfect and historically accurate wearing of this beautiful dagger, we highly recommend acquiring a replica of a Roman legionary belt (cingulum) adorned with brass plates, which, together with a gladius sword, will create a breathtaking and fully authentic set.
