Long Stem Smoking Pipe "Churchwarden", Acacia Wood, 17th-19th Century Style

Comfort and Style from the Age of Sail and Enlightenment

Tobacco smoking spread in Europe after the discovery of America, but pipes with a long stem became particularly popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. They were first made of clay, and later of wood. Their main advantage was practicality: the long stem cooled the smoke, ensuring a smoother and cooler smoking experience. It also kept the hot bowl and smoke away from the face, which was ideal for activities like reading – in Germany, they were nicknamed "Lesepfeife" (reading pipe). They thus became an accessory for gentlemen, scholars, and sailors alike.

Design and Functionality

This pipe combines historical aesthetics with modern practicality. Its greatest advantage is the screw-on bowl, which can be easily detached from the stem. This dramatically simplifies cleaning and maintenance, which is crucial for preserving a good taste in pipes with such a long smoke channel. The carved details on the bowl are reminiscent of baroque and rococo decorative motifs, making each piece a small work of art.

How to Care for Your Wooden Pipe

To ensure your pipe serves you well and smoking from it is always a pleasure, a few principles should be followed:

  • Breaking In: For the first 5-10 smokes, proceed slowly and carefully, ideally with the bowl half-filled. This will build up a protective layer of carbon ("cake") inside the bowl, which protects the wood from burning through.
  • Cleaning: After each smoke, allow the pipe to cool down completely. Never disassemble a hot pipe! Once cool, unscrew the bowl and run a pipe cleaner through the stem and shank. Gently remove ash and tobacco remnants from the bowl with a pipe tool.
  • Storage: Store the pipe in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight.
