The slender, gently curved stem creates a silhouette associated with classic fantasy novels, films and role-playing games. Its black surface is interrupted by a warm reddish-brown section near the mouthpiece and a matching detail on the bowl. These accents are not metal fittings but exposed or decoratively coloured sections of the wooden body.

The compact bowl has a slightly teardrop-shaped exterior and a cylindrical tobacco chamber. Its long stem keeps the heat farther from the face and gives the smoke a longer route than a conventional short pipe. Despite its dramatic dimensions, the complete piece weighs only approximately 31 g or 1.09 oz, making it comfortable to hold or carry as a costume prop.

The Historical Background of Long-Stemmed Pipes

Although this design complements fantasy and pseudo-medieval costumes, it is not an accurate medieval reproduction. Tobacco did not reach Europe until after contact with the Americas at the end of the 15th century. European tobacco pipes became increasingly common during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Pipes with exceptionally long stems are now commonly known as churchwarden pipes or reading pipes. They are particularly associated with the 18th and 19th centuries. The extended smoke channel could help cool the smoke and kept the burning bowl farther from the smoker’s face. Modern fantasy literature and cinema later transformed the shape into an enduring symbol of wise wizards, hermits, travelling scholars and wandering storytellers.

Two-Piece Construction with a Detachable Bowl

The bowl can be separated from the stem by turning it carefully. A wooden screw thread makes the pipe easier to transport and provides improved access to the smoke channel during cleaning. When reassembling it, align the thread correctly and tighten the bowl using your fingers only. Pliers or excessive force may split or strip the wooden joint.

Always allow the pipe to cool completely before unscrewing the bowl. Warm wood may expand slightly, and turning the connection whilst hot could cause the thread to seize, crack or pull away from the surrounding material.

Preparing and Using the Pipe

Before the first use, inspect the chamber, smoke channel and wooden thread. Remove loose dust with a dry pipe cleaner. Add tobacco loosely in several stages, pressing it down gently with a suitable tamper. Packing the chamber too firmly restricts the airflow and may cause the wooden bowl to overheat.

Light the contents carefully and smoke at a slow pace. When the bowl becomes uncomfortably hot to touch, place the pipe on a fire-resistant stand and allow it to cool. Give the mango wood sufficient time to dry between uses. The pipe should not be subjected to continuous or rapid smoking.

• After cleaning, leave both sections apart to dry in a well-ventilated place.
• Keep the wooden thread clean and never tighten it with excessive force.
• Store the pipe in a dry place away from direct sunlight, radiators and other intense heat sources.
