Medieval Camp Knife from Stainless Steel with Genuine Horn Handle

Historical Context and Practical Application

In the Middle Ages, a knife was an absolute basic element of personal equipment. It was worn on the belt by practically everyone – men and women, simple peasants, skilled craftsmen, and the nobility. Since forks were not commonly used, it served not only as personal cutlery but also as an everyday universal tool for minor work. This specific camp knife is designed expressly for preparing and consuming food in historical encampments. The robust full-tang construction, where the steel tang of the blade runs through the entire length of the handle, guarantees high strength. Although stainless steel was only invented at the beginning of the twentieth century, it represents the ideal choice for this functional replica. You get the historically accurate visual appearance of polished steel, but without the need for constant cleaning to prevent rust, which is invaluable especially when cutting acidic foods like apples or onions.

Care and Maintenance of Natural Materials

For this knife to serve you well for many seasons and look as good as new, it requires proper care. Although the steel blade is resistant to corrosion, always wash the knife after use in warm water with a little mild detergent and dry it thoroughly immediately. We strongly warn against using a dishwasher or a microwave oven! Extreme temperatures and aggressive chemicals would irreversibly destroy the natural horn; the material would crack and lose its strength and colour. We recommend occasionally rubbing the horn handle lightly with natural oil (such as linseed oil or beeswax), which prevents it from drying out and enhances the natural grain of the material.

Safety Warnings for the User

This product is supplied with a blade that is not sharpened to a razor edge from the factory, but it is sufficient for cutting food. Depending on your own preferences, it can easily be sharpened yourself using whetstones (we recommend a grit of maximum 1000). We strongly emphasize that, for safety reasons, this is a tool and a replica of a cold weapon that is absolutely not intended for contact fencing, historical battles, cutting tests, or any man-to-man combat! Careless or incorrect use poses a risk of serious injury to you and your surroundings. Use the knife exclusively for its intended purpose, which is the camp kitchen and food preparation.

Together with this knife, we recommend purchasing a high-quality period leather belt sheath and a traditional whetstone from our permanent range, which form a perfect and practical set with this product for every reenactor.
