Medieval Hand-Forged Style Door Knocker
A Stylish and Functional Accessory for Your Home
This knocker is not just a decoration but a fully functional element. Its deep, resonant sound is far more personal than the buzz of a modern doorbell. You can use it on your front door, but it will also look fantastic on solid wooden gates, a wine cellar door, a garden shed, or even as a stylish handle for a large wooden chest.
Door Knockers Through History
Door knockers have a surprisingly long history, dating back to ancient Greece. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, they became a common feature on doors, with their craftsmanship and material often symbolizing the wealth and social status of the homeowner. They served as a simple and effective way to announce one's presence long before the invention of the electric doorbell.
A Historical Tidbit: Sanctuary Knockers
Did you know that the doors of some medieval churches featured special "sanctuary knockers"? If a person pursued by the law grasped one, they were granted the right of church asylum for 30 to 40 days, keeping them temporarily safe from their persecutors.
Installation and Care
To preserve the original appearance of the knocker for years to come, give it a little care.
Installation
Installation is very straightforward. The knocker attaches with two screws through the pre-drilled holes in the mounting plate. Fasteners (screws) are not included in the delivery. Be sure to select screws appropriate for the material and thickness of your door or gate.
Caring for the Knocker
The product is treated from the factory with a protective layer of preservative oil to prevent corrosion during transport and storage. You can easily wipe this layer off with a dry cloth before installation. For long-term protection, especially in an outdoor environment, we recommend occasionally treating the surface with a suitable preservative oil or a wax for metal. Never use abrasive materials or harsh chemical cleaners, as they could damage the surface.
