"Sire de Joinville" One-Handed Sword, 15th Century, with Scabbard

Detailed Product Description

This sword impresses at first glance with its balanced and functional aesthetics.

  • Blade: The double-edged blade, made from high-quality carbon steel (not stainless), tapers to a sharp point. Its width at the guard gives it proper authority.
  • Hilt: The hilt consists of a polished hardwood grip that provides a comfortable and secure hold.
  • Guard and Pommel: The steel crossguard is elegantly curved towards the blade (Oakeshott typology Style 2), which helps to protect the hand. The ornate steel pommel in a "fishtail" shape (Oakeshott Type V) not only perfectly balances the sword but is also decorated with a leaf motif. Both the guard and pommel have an authentic patinated (antiqued) finish.
  • Scabbard: A sturdy black leather-covered scabbard is included. Its metal throat (with a suspension ring) and chape feature the same patinated finish as the sword's hilt.

The Story of Sire de Joinville

The inspiration for the sword's name is Jean de Joinville (c. 1224–1317), a chronicler and close companion of King Louis IX of France. He became famous for many brave deeds during the Seventh Crusade. One story tells of how he was attacked by a Saracen horseman. De Joinville, having already lost his lance, reportedly clamped his sword under his arm like a lance and killed his opponent in a counter-attack. It is this cold-blooded courage and adaptability that inspired the name of this sword.

Care of the Sword

The blade is made of carbon steel, which is prone to rust. To keep your sword in perfect condition:

  • After each use (even just handling), wipe the blade carefully with a dry cloth to remove moisture and fingerprints.
  • Regularly coat the blade with a thin layer of oil (e.g., conservation oil, machine oil, or paraffin oil).
  • Store the sword in a dry environment. Do not leave it in the leather scabbard for extended periods, as leather can absorb moisture and cause the blade to rust.
  • You can treat the wooden grip with linseed oil or wood wax from time to time.
