Hand-Forged Medieval Utility Knife with Shisham Wood Handle and Leather Scabbard

Description and Practical Use

This knife is designed as a universal craft and dining tool. The carbon steel blade stands out for its excellent cutting edge and ease of sharpening. The upper part of the blade is left in its raw state with forge scale for a rustic look, while the edge is precisely ground. The handle, made of Shisham wood (Indian Rosewood), is securely attached to the full tang with two rivets and features a lanyard hole with a leather thong for easy drawing. The knife comes with a robust, hand-stitched leather scabbard with decorative embossing, which can be easily hung from your belt.

Historical Context

In the Middle Ages, a knife was an absolutely essential item worn at the belt by everyone – from the simplest peasant to the wealthiest merchant or knight. Unlike the sword, which was a status symbol and a weapon of war, the knife was a daily helper. It was used for eating (forks as we know them today practically did not exist), for woodworking, leatherworking, and for self-defence. The forge marks you see on the blade are a typical sign of period production, where blacksmiths focused on the functionality of the edge rather than a mirror polish of the entire surface.

Care Instructions and Safety Warnings

Since the blade is made of carbon steel (not stainless), the knife requires your attention. After each use, especially after contact with acidic foods (fruit, onions), rinse the knife, dry it carefully, and wipe the blade with a thin layer of mineral oil or food-grade oil. This will prevent rust from forming. The Shisham wood handle should be occasionally treated with linseed oil to maintain its rich grain. Warning: The knife is delivered sharp. This is a functional and decorative item, not intended for contact fencing or throwing. Exercise extreme caution when handling it to avoid injury to yourself or others. Never store the knife in a damp scabbard for long periods. We recommend purchasing a sharpening stone to maintain a perfect edge and a leather belt from our collection for carrying the scabbard.
