Teutonic Knight Figurine – The Black Crusader

Armoured Guardian of the Faith

The figurine is made of high-quality polyresin, which allows for the capture of even the finest details, such as individual chainmail rings or the texture of the fabric. The knight is clad in a long chainmail shirt (hauberk) and chainmail chausses, corresponding to armour of the 12th to 13th centuries. On his head, he wears a massive great helm (bucket helm), decorated with gold cross fittings, suggesting a higher status or rank. Over his armour, he wears a black surcoat and a cloak with a white cross. The knight's stance is calm but vigilant – his hand rests on the hilt of his sword, ready to draw it at any moment.

Historical Insight: The Teutonic Order

The Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, better known as the Teutonic Order, originally formed as a hospital brotherhood in the Holy Land but soon transformed into a powerful military order. Although the white mantle with a black cross is typical for them, historical variations in attire existed depending on rank (e.g., knight brothers vs. sergeants) or specific periods. The black surcoat with a white cross seen on the statuette also evokes the early period of the Hospitallers or the aesthetic of "Black Knights," who in literature and legends often represented unyielding and mysterious warriors. The great helm was a symbol of Crusader armies, offering maximum head protection, albeit at the cost of limited visibility.

How to Care for the Figurine

While this knight looks like he could withstand a sword blow, the material of the statuette requires gentle handling:

  • Placement: Polyresin is strong once hardened, but brittle. If dropped on a hard floor (tiles, parquet), the statuette could shatter. Therefore, find a safe place for it where it is not at risk of being knocked over.
  • Cleaning: Use only a soft brush or a dry duster to remove dust. Avoid wet cleaning and chemicals, which could damage the hand-painting and patina.
  • Temperature: Do not expose the statuette to direct heat sources (radiators, fireplaces) or prolonged direct sunlight to prevent the colours from fading.

A replica of a historical dagger or a stylish bookend with a Crusade theme would also go well with this statuette.
