Hand-Forged Medieval Carbon Steel Utility Knife with Twisted Handle

Historical Context and Traditional Blacksmithing

Knives forged from a single piece of steel, known as integral knives, have very deep historical roots. They were widely used from the Iron Age, through the Viking era, right up to the late Middle Ages. They were often referred to as "women's knives", as they formed the absolute core of everyday equipment for housewives, craftsmen, and common peasants, who wore them suspended from a belt or around the neck. On this presented knife, the rough forge scale has been intentionally left on the flats, giving the weapon an unmistakable rustic appearance, whilst the edge itself is carefully ground smooth. Curling the end of the handle into a volute (scroll) was a very popular decorative and functional element on historical originals, preventing the tool from slipping out of the palm.

Practical Use and Safety Warnings

This medieval knife is supplied with a functional edge and serves brilliantly as a universal camp tool. You can easily manage cutting leather, preparing meals in a field kitchen, or whittling small kindling for a fire. However, we strongly emphasise that the blade is sharp and the tool is by no means intended for contact fencing, martial arts training (HEMA), or stage combat. Using it for these purposes presents a risk of serious injury and is strictly at your own risk. Use the knife exclusively as a practical working tool and a decorative complement to your historical clothing.

Proper Care for the Knife and Leather Sheath

The knife is made of traditional carbon steel, which is characterised by excellent cutting performance but is not rust-resistant. For the knife to serve you for many years and not become covered in rust, proper care is essential. After every use, especially after cutting food or contact with moisture, wash the blade thoroughly, dry it, and apply a thin layer of gun oil or food-safe oil. The supplied sheath is hand-stitched from genuine leather. We recommend treating it at least twice a year with a quality leather balm containing beeswax, ensuring the leather retains its natural suppleness and water resistance.

To accompany this authentic forged knife, we highly recommend purchasing a natural sharpening stone from our range, allowing you to easily maintain the edge in perfect condition even in the field conditions of a historical camp.
