Hand axes were an absolute staple in Viking society. They served as an indispensable tool for daily woodworking, shipbuilding, and survival in the harsh wilderness, but if necessary, they instantly turned into a deadly weapon. The rich decoration, as you can see on this piece, usually indicated a higher social status of the owner – for example, a Thane (a noble warrior or retainer). The intricate interlaced patterns on the handle are typical of Norse art. The engraving on the bone pommel depicts Mjölnir, the mythical hammer of the thunder god Thor, which gave its bearer courage, strength, and protection in battle.

Noble Materials and Masterful Craftsmanship

The axe head is forged from a single piece of high-grade X46Cr13 stainless steel, which is hardened to 52 RC. This ensures excellent corrosion resistance and good edge retention. The anatomically shaped handle, which fits perfectly in the hand, is made of hard North Indian Sissoo wood (also known as Indian rosewood). On both sides of the haft, you will find deeply etched Norse ornaments. The butt of the handle is formed by a plate of genuine animal bone, into which the mentioned Mjölnir symbol is meticulously burnt. The delivery also includes a practical and sturdy leather edge cover (sheath) with a steel snap fastener.

Guidelines for Safe Use and Proper Maintenance

For safety reasons, we must emphasise that this small axe has a functional edge and is under no circumstances intended for historical contact combat, HEMA, stage fighting, or person-to-person duelling. Although the steel is of high quality, striking it against other steel weapons could damage the blade or cause injury. The axe is ideal as a high-quality collector's decoration, costume accessory, or a tool for light camp activities (e.g., trimming small branches). Use is entirely at your own risk.

To ensure this beautiful piece lasts a long time like new, we recommend cleaning the steel head after each use. Even though it is stainless steel, an occasional treatment with fine gun oil will only benefit the metal. Protect the wooden haft and bone cap from extreme moisture or excessive heat (e.g., do not leave the axe lying directly next to a blazing fire). The leather on the sheath should be greased from time to time with a beeswax-based balm.
