Sturdy Full Tang Outdoor Knife with Olive Wood Handle

Construction and Practical Use in the Wild

The foundation of this knife is a durable drop point blade with a slight false edge (swedge) on the spine, which is made from proven 440 stainless steel. This steel is highly regarded in the knife-making world for its excellent rust resistance and good edge retention, while also being relatively easy to sharpen in the field. Safety during heavy-duty work, such as piercing or forceful cutting, is reliably ensured by a massive steel guard (quillon) that effectively prevents your fingers from slipping onto the edge. The wooden scales are firmly riveted to the steel core of the handle using hollow pins. At the very end of the handle, you will find a practical lanyard hole through which you can easily thread a paracord or a leather strap for an even more secure grip.

Historical Context and the Evolution of Camp Knives

Tools with a fixed blade have accompanied humanity since time immemorial. While medieval hunters and explorers relied on massive hunting hangers and long daggers, the rise of modern camping and bushcraft in the 20th century created the need for shorter, durable, and multipurpose tools. The full-tang concept, where the blade and the core of the handle form one massive piece of metal, stems from the necessity to produce a tool that can withstand extreme prying or so-called batoning (splitting wood by striking the spine of the blade). Furthermore, the olive wood used for the scales was highly prized already in the ancient Mediterranean for its hardness, toughness, and beautiful, irregular grain.

Important Safety Warnings

Please note that this knife comes very sharp from the factory and is intended exclusively as a working and outdoor tool. Under no circumstances is it a weapon intended for contact historical fencing, martial arts practice, or man-to-man duels. Extreme strikes with the edge against another metal object would lead to its irreversible destruction. The knife is also not balanced for target throwing – the impact could cause the beautiful wooden scales to crack. When working, always cut away from your body and ensure that neither your fingers nor other people are in the path of the cut.

How to Properly Care for Your Knife and Sheath

To ensure your knife serves you in perfect condition for many years, we recommend cleaning it of dirt and food residues and drying it thoroughly after each use. Even though the blade is made of stainless steel, occasionally wiping it with a thin layer of oil (e.g., camellia oil or standard gun oil) will definitely do it good. Never wash the knife in a dishwasher; the high temperatures and chemicals would completely destroy the wooden handle! We recommend treating the olive wood scales from time to time with linseed oil or beeswax, which will give the wood moisture resistance and beautifully enhance its natural grain. Occasionally condition the leather sheath with leather balm so it does not crack and remains supple.

Recommended Accessories

To maintain a perfect working edge right in the field, we recommend purchasing a high-quality pocket diamond or ceramic sharpener from our range, with which you can quickly and easily resharpen the 440 stainless steel.
