Symbolism of Sword and Faith

This cross is no ordinary Christian symbol. It is the emblem of the Order of Santiago, a military-religious order founded in the 12th century to protect pilgrims and drive the Moors from the Iberian Peninsula. The cross is shaped like a sword (cross fitchy), symbolising that Saint James was not only an apostle but also a protector and warrior. The ends of the arms are shaped like lilies (fleur-de-lis), representing "flawless honour".
