Square Weaving Tablets from Horn, Set of 6

Dive into the fascinating world of tablet weaving! With this set of six square weaving tablets, you get the essential tool for creating your own authentic bands, borders, and trims. They are handmade from genuine buffalo horn, which is ethically sourced and polished to a smooth, dark finish. Their greatest advantage is their clever design: the tablets become thinner towards the edges. This makes them lighter, sit better in the hand, and, most importantly, makes them much easier to turn when you change the shed. Whether you are a Viking, a Slav, or just an enthusiast of historical crafts, with these tablets you can start weaving beautiful trims for your tunics, dresses, and other costume parts. Square Weaving Tablets from Horn, Set of 6

History and Use of Weaving Tablets

Tablet weaving is an ancient technique with roots stretching back to the Bronze Age, long before the Vikings. However, it was during the Early Middle Ages, especially in Viking culture (as evidenced by finds from Oseberg, for example), that this craft reached a peak of complexity and beauty. It was used to produce bands that were both extremely strong and highly decorative.

These bands (braids or trims) were used as:

  • Decorative trims on tunics, dresses, cloaks, and trousers
  • Strong belts and straps
  • Bindings for bags or pouches

The four-holed square shape, like this product, is the most common and versatile type, allowing for a wide variety of patterns to be created, from simple twills to complex animal motifs.

How to Work with the Tablets

The principle is simple but allows for great variation:

  1. The yarn (warp) is threaded through the four holes in each tablet.
  2. The tablets are arranged into a "pack" and the warp threads are tensioned (e.g., between a belt and a fixed point).
  3. By turning the tablets (all at once, or in groups), the position of the threads changes, creating a shed – the gap between the upper and lower threads.
  4. The weft thread is passed through this shed (on a shuttle or by hand).
  5. A subsequent turn locks the weave, and the weft thread is beaten down (often with the edge of the tablets or a separate weaving sword).

It is precisely at step 3 that you will appreciate the tapered edges of these tablets, as turning the entire pack is much smoother and meets with less resistance.

Care for Horn Products

As this is a natural material, these tablets require a little care to last you a lifetime.

  • Protect from drops: Horn is tough, but a fall onto a hard surface (stone, tiles) can chip or crack it.
  • Do not expose to heat: Do not leave the tablets in direct sunlight, on a radiator, or in a hot car. Extreme heat can dry out and warp the material.
  • Do not soak: Prolonged exposure to water can cause the material to swell or delaminate. If they get wet, wipe them dry.
  • No chemicals: A dry or very slightly damp cloth is sufficient for cleaning. Never use a dishwasher, detergents, or solvents.
  • Maintenance: If they seem dry over time, you can lightly rub them with a natural oil (like linseed oil) and buff with a dry cloth.
