History and Use

Padlocks of similar shapes and constructions were used for centuries, from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. They were used to protect valuables in chests, secure doors, gates, and even as symbols. This lock, with its shield-like or heart-like shape, evokes the Gothic and Renaissance periods.

Care Instructions

Although the internal mechanism of the lock is preserved, the lock is made from carbon steel, which is susceptible to rust. For a long life and a flawless appearance, we recommend protecting the lock from permanent moisture. If it gets wet, dry it off. From time to time, you can wipe the surface with a conservation oil (e.g., gun oil) to maintain its black patinated look and protect it from rust. It's good to occasionally treat the internal mechanism with lock oil to keep the key turning smoothly. Never use brute force if the key jams, as you could damage the mechanism.
