Mounting and Use
These nocks are designed as sockets (ferrules) that fit onto the ends of the bow limbs. Installation requires craftsmanship:
- The ends of your bow limbs must be carefully worked into a conical shape that precisely matches the inner tapered socket of the nock.
- The inner diameter of the nocks is approximately 15 mm and tapers inwards, ensuring a very firm and tight fit.
- For a permanent and reliable attachment, using a modern epoxy adhesive is recommended. Historically, heated bone or sinew glue would have been used.
- Both nocks already have pre-cut string grooves. During the gluing process, it is crucial to ensure that both grooves are perfectly aligned with the bow's axis.
Care for Natural Horn
To ensure your nocks last as long as possible and retain their beautiful appearance, remember that horn is a natural material.
- Protect from drops: A fall onto a hard surface (stone, concrete) can cause cracking or chipping.
- Avoid extreme heat: Do not leave the bow in a hot car or in direct sunlight. High temperatures can dry out the horn, causing it to warp or crack.
- Avoid prolonged soaking: If the bow gets wet, wipe the nocks dry. Prolonged moisture is not good for the material.
- Each piece is unique: As this is natural buffalo horn, the colour, grain, and minor dimensions may vary slightly from piece to piece.
