Men's Leather Baroque Latchet Shoes With Brass Buckle Strap

Historical Context And Safety Features

During the 17th century, men's footwear began to change—soft, flat shoes were gradually replaced by sturdier footwear with a hard sole and heel. Fastening via a leather strap over the instep (the latchet style) was among the most popular styles for soldiers, musketeers, and burghers across Europe. This model of historical shoes is sewn using the traditional flexible shoemaking method, which guarantees high elasticity and durability of the joint between the upper and the sole. However, for a modern fencer and re-enactor, a smooth leather sole is highly dangerous on wet grass or castle cobblestones. Therefore, both the sole and the low heel are masterfully under-glued with a thick layer of patterned rubber, giving you absolute stability and secure footing during dynamic fencing.

Sizes And Custom Tailoring

This popular model is available in standard EU sizes. If you have an atypically wide foot, an unusually high instep, or simply demand absolute comfort, we also offer custom tailoring. Just select the custom variant when choosing your size, and carefully fill out our measurement chart after submitting your order. If you wear orthopaedic insoles and plan to use them in these shoes, it is absolutely essential to send them to us in advance. The manufacturer will precisely and functionally integrate them directly into the footbed so you are guaranteed maximum comfort.

Leather Care

Leather is a living material that dries out and cracks without regular care. These shoes are treated with a beeswax balm during production. After each event, clean the mud off and grease them with a high-quality leather balm or cobbler's oil. This softens the leather, waterproofs it, and gives it a beautiful patina. Scuffs from fencing duels can be easily covered with standard shoe polish in the matching colour. When the footwear gets wet, stuff it with old newspaper and let it dry very slowly at room temperature. Never dry the boots on a radiator, close to a fire, or in harsh summer sunlight!

Recommended Accessories

To achieve an absolutely perfect period look and prevent blisters, we highly recommend purchasing historical knitted socks and an elegant leather belt with a brass buckle in the same style to accompany these shoes.
