Who Are Witchers?

Witchers were invented by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, whose books quickly became a global phenomenon. A Witcher is a professional monster slayer, a mutant subjected to harsh trials and transformations as a child, known as the Trial of the Grasses. These mutations strip away emotions (or so people say) and grant superhuman speed, strength, and night vision.

The main protagonist is Geralt of Rivia. Geralt wanders a morally grey world, takes contracts and slays monsters for coin. He always carries two swords: steel for humans and silver for monsters.

Key Characters

The world of the Witcher is shaped not only by Geralt, but also by many other key characters whose fates intertwine with his.

  • Ciri (Cirilla): The Child of Surprise, princess of Cintra and Geralt’s ward. Her Elder Blood gives her immense and dangerous power she barely understands.
  • Dandelion (Jaskier): A famous bard, poet and Geralt’s best friend. He immortalizes Geralt’s deeds in song, but he constantly gets in trouble.
  • Vesemir: The oldest surviving Witcher and mentor to the other witchers at Kaer Morhen (the Witcher Keep).

Witcher Signs

While witchers aren’t typical mages, they wield a form of simple combat magic known as Signs. These give them an advantage in tough situations. The most famous Signs include:

  • Aard: A telekinetic thrust that stuns or knocks down opponents.
  • Igni: A burst of fire.
  • Quen: A protective magical shield.
  • Axii: A hypnotic effect that can calm people and creatures or manipulate their mind.

Monsters and Beasts

The main job of the witchers is slaying monsters. During the Conjunction of the Spheres, many creatures and monsters have entered the Continent. Every Witcher needs to study the Bestiary and learn about the weaknesses of every beast. Among other things, the Witchers have to face strigas, drowners, griffins and leshens. To defeat each one of them, Witchers must use different fighting techniques, potions or blade oils.

The Path is unforgiving, and proper preparation is essential. Find the weapons you need in our range of Witcher sword replicas.

Sorceresses and Yennefer of Vengerberg

Sorceresses are powerful, politically influential and often breathtakingly beautiful. The most iconic is Yennefer of Vengerberg.

Geralt’s true love, bound to him by a complicated and passionate relationship. Yennefer is known for her fierce will, her lilac and gooseberries scent, and black and white clothing. Though she may seem cold and distant, she would sacrifice anything to protect Ciri, whom she sees as her own daughter.

The Gaming Phenomenon

Although the saga began with books, international fame skyrocketed with the role-playing game series developed by CD Projekt Red, especially The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is widely regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time. Its massive world, featuring Velen, Novigrad, Skellige and many other fascinating locations, won the hearts of millions of players around the globe. The games carry the story beyond the books and let players experience the life of the Witcher first-hand.

The Witcher Netflix Series

The franchise grew even further thanks to the Netflix series. It returns to the books and follows the journeys of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri from their first encounters to the great wars. The stunning visuals of medallions and costumes inspired a whole new era of fandom.

What is Wild Hunt?

The Wild Hunt appears throughout the Witcher universe. A spectral cavalcade of elves from another world, the Aen Elle. They soar across the sky as omens of war and doom. Their king, Eredin, seeks to capture Ciri and use the power of Elder Blood to rule across worlds. The battle against the Wild Hunt is a central theme of The Witcher 3.
