It is assumed that if they were actually used, they served more as protection for women against rape during wartime or as a bizarre sex toy, rather than a tool of long-term marital oppression.
Usage and Warning
This replica is fully articulated and hinged, allowing it to be put on. It consists of a waist belt and a vertical plate with a toothed cutout. Locking is achieved via a loop at the top where a padlock can be placed (lock is not included).
Important Warning: Although the belt is technically wearable, I strongly advise against long-term wear. The metal sheet is hard, cold, and the edges, while not knife-sharp, can cause chafing during movement. From a hygienic and health perspective, long-term wear is dangerous. Product Care
Since the belt is made of steel sheet which can be subject to corrosion, it requires maintenance:
- Store it in a dry place. Moisture is the number one enemy.
- Occasionally treat the metal with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or silicone oil) to prevent rust and maintain the mobility of the hinges.
- If you use the belt as a wall decoration, simply wiping it with a dry cloth to remove dust from time to time is sufficient.
