A Glimpse into History
The Laguiole style originated in the 19th century in a small village in the rugged Aubrac region of Southern France. It was originally a working tool for shepherds and farmers, combining elements of the Spanish navaja folding knife and the local capuchadou knife. A typical feature was often the bee or fly forged onto the spring of the knife. Over time, this simple peasant knife evolved into a symbol of French art de vivre. Your knife set draws on this tradition with its shape and decorative bolsters, reminiscent of an era when a knife was a man's most reliable companion.
Care and Safety
To ensure your knives serve you for years and maintain their pristine look, follow these care instructions:
- Never wash the knives in a dishwasher. Harsh chemicals and hot water will irreversibly damage the wooden handles and the steel structure.
- After use, wipe the knife with a damp cloth and dry it immediately.
- Occasionally rub the wooden handles (especially the olive wood ones) with a drop of linseed or olive oil to prevent drying and maintain their vibrant colour.
- Keep the knives sharp using a honing steel or whetstone – a blunt knife is ironically more dangerous as it requires more force during use.
- Remember that these are folding knives without a mechanical lock. Exercise caution during use to prevent the blade from accidentally closing on your fingers.
