Katana Fitting Set: Blackened Flattened Fuchi & Kashira

Crafted from a high-quality metal alloy with a matte black coating, these fittings are highly resistant to wear. The fuchi (the collar near the guard) ensures a secure connection between the handle, the guard, and the blade, while the kashira (the pommel cap) encloses the wooden core, protecting it from splitting. The flattened shape of the kashira is highly favored by martial artists who require a more compact handle end that does not interfere with rapid grip transitions.

Technical Parameters and Dimensions

This set is directly compatible with all swords in the John Lee series, but due to its standardized dimensions, it can be fitted to most common katana replicas after minor individual adjustments.

History and Practical Use

During the Edo period, Japanese sword fittings (tosogu) were divided into ornate ceremonial pieces and practical fittings for daily carry and combat. A flattened kashira was typical for swords worn with civilian attire, where it was desirable for the sword not to protrude too much or catch on clothing. Samurai believed that the sword's furniture reflected the owner's soul – simplicity and black symbolized discipline, moderation, and readiness. A key feature of the kashira is the openings (shitodome) through which the ito (braid) is threaded, securing the fitting to the handle.

Installation and Maintenance Guide

During installation, ensure the fittings fit snugly onto the wooden tsuka core without excessive pressure. If the opening is too tight, gently sand the wood with a fine file. Never strike the fittings with a hammer, as this may damage the finish or crack the metal.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Wipe the fittings after every practice with a soft, dry cloth to remove acidic sweat.
  • Once a month, apply a thin layer of sword maintenance oil (e.g., Camellia oil) to prevent corrosion of the base material.
  • Avoid contact with acidic substances and harsh cleaning agents that could strip the black coating.

We recommend purchasing new handle wrap cord (ito) and high-quality ray skin (same-gawa) along with this set to achieve a professional and uniform restoration of your sword.
