The statue depicts the goddess in a kneeling position on a rectangular base decorated with lotus flower reliefs. Her arms are spread wide, transforming into magnificent feathered wings that symbolise the protection and care she provided to the Pharaoh and the entire land. The figure features black skin, which in ancient Egyptian symbolism represented the fertile soil of the Nile and rebirth, contrasting with her golden attire resembling scales or feathers. On her head, adorned with a headband, stands her most significant attribute—the ostrich feather.

Maat: More Than Just a Goddess

For ancient Egyptians, Maat was not just one of many goddesses; she represented the very concept of existence. She was the personification of truth, law, and cosmic order, without which the world would collapse into chaos (Isfet). Her ostrich feather played a crucial role in the judgment of the dead in the Hall of Two Truths. The heart of the deceased was weighed against this very feather. If the heart was as light as the feather, the soul could enter the afterlife. Having her statue at home symbolically signifies a commitment to living a life of truth and honour.
