Women's Renaissance coifs were widely worn across Italy, France, England and the Holy Roman Empire during the 16th century. They covered carefully styled hair while expressing elegance, modesty and social status. Luxurious velvet was particularly favoured by noblewomen and prosperous townswomen.
The coif is worn over styled hair or a period hairstyle and comfortably adapts to the shape of the head thanks to its soft construction.
