Viking Gjallarhorn Blowing Horn with Cast Bronze Mouthpiece

The Mythological Legacy of the Gjallarhorn

Blowing horns played an irreplaceable role in history for battlefield communication, summoning assemblies, and hunting expeditions. This specific Viking horn references the mythical Gjallarhorn, which, according to Norse mythology, is sounded by the god Heimdall to warn the gods of the approaching Ragnarök. Its shape and detailed ornamentation fully correspond to the historical art style of the early Middle Ages.

Traditional Craftsmanship and Lost-Wax Bronze

The horn is meticulously hand-polished, bringing out its natural texture and dark coloration. However, the crucial element is the bronze mouthpiece and suspension fittings, which are crafted using the ancient lost-wax casting method. Every detail of the Norse knot-work is carefully sculpted in wax, and upon casting in bronze, it acquires a beautiful historical patina. Due to this manual processing of natural materials and metals, individual pieces may vary slightly in details and dimensions. A sturdy leather strap is included, allowing you to carry the horn comfortably slung over your shoulder.

Proper Use and Horn Care

To produce a loud, deep sound, you must blow into the mouthpiece in a specific way, much like playing a brass instrument—press your lips tightly together and let them buzz. Although primarily a signaling instrument, it is made of genuine natural ox horn. The horn is treated on the inside with a food-safe resin varnish. Should you ever think of using it for drinking, remember that drinks like beer, mead, wine, water, and non-acidic soft drinks are suitable to be served in it, but hot drinks and liquids with an alcohol content above 20% are completely unsuitable. The product would definitely be ruined if you washed it in a dishwasher or heated it in a microwave. Wash it only by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap. Also, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and extreme heat. We recommend polishing the bronze parts occasionally with a soft, non-abrasive cloth to maintain their luster.
