Denarius of Duke Bořivoj II (1107–1120), Replica of a Medieval Coin (Tin,18,7 mm)
A Testimony from the Age of Ducal Feuds
Every detail on this coin holds a deep symbolic meaning that reflects the mindset and power structures of its time. It is a dialogue between the secular ruler and his heavenly protector.
- Obverse (DUX BORIVOI): On the front, we see Duke Bořivoj II in armour, seated on a dynamically leaping horse. With a spear and sword in hand, he is portrayed as a strong military leader and defender of his country. The Latin inscription DUX BORIVOI means "Duke Bořivoj" and clearly identifies the issuer of the coin.
- Reverse (S WENCEZLAUS): The back is reserved for the highest authority—Saint Wenceslas. He is depicted with a book, a symbol of wisdom and faith, and with his left hand raised in a gesture of blessing. The inscription S WENCEZLAUS (Sanctus Wenceslaus) identifies him as a saint. Placing the patron saint on the currency was intended to legitimize the power of the earthly duke and place his reign under divine protection.
Duke Bořivoj II and the Cult of Saint Wenceslas
Bořivoj II (reigned 1107–1110 and 1117–1120) was a Bohemian duke from the Přemyslid dynasty. His reign was marked by constant disputes and power struggles with other members of his family, which was typical for this period. It was in these uncertain times that it was crucial for a ruler to lean on a higher authority.
That authority was the cult of Saint Wenceslas. Since his martyrdom in 935, Duke Wenceslas had been venerated as the eternal ruler and heavenly patron of the Bohemian state. Earthly rulers were seen merely as his temporary representatives. Minting coins with his portrait was a powerful political statement, declaring: "My rule is just and is under the protection of Saint Wenceslas himself."
