Joachimsthaler Thaler with Patina, Alpaca Replica (40 mm)

A Treasure with the Soul of a Bygone Era

Unlike new, shiny strikes, this replica is created to look like a real historical artifact. It is struck using classic technology from hand-engraved dies into solid alpaca silver (also known as German silver or nickel silver) – an alloy with a colour and weight similar to silver. Each piece is then hand-patinated and protected with a lacquer to achieve the most faithful appearance of a worn original.

  • Obverse (Front): Bears the Bohemian national coat of arms – the lion – and the inscription with the name of the formal issuer of the coin: LUDOVICVS PRIMVS DEI GRACIA REX BOEMIE (Louis the First, by the Grace of God, King of Bohemia).
  • Reverse (Back): Depicts the figure of Saint Joachim, the patron saint of miners, holding the coat of arms of the Schlick family, who were behind the discovery of the silver and the minting of the thalers. The inscription reads: ARMA DOMINORVM SLICORVM STEFANI ET FRATRVM COMITVM DE BASAIA (Coat of arms of the Lords of Schlick, Stephan and brothers, Counts of Bassano).

For the Most Faithful Depiction of History

Thanks to its size and realistic patina, this coin is the ideal choice for reenactors and LARPers who want their character to appear truly wealthy and their equipment to be believable. In a pouch, it gives the impression of a real circulating currency with a rich history. It also serves excellently as a prop for film and theatre, or as a centrepiece of a collection that captivates at first glance with its authenticity.

The Story of the Coin That Conquered the World

In the early 16th century, the Counts of Schlick discovered a fabulously rich silver deposit in the Ore Mountains near Joachimsthal (Czech: Jáchymov). They received the right to mint coins from King Louis I (1516–1526) and began to strike large silver coins of exceptional quality. These coins, called "Joachimsthalers," quickly gained fame throughout Europe. Their name was soon shortened to "Thaler" and became the generic term for any large silver coin. Centuries later, from this name, the name for the American "dollar" evolved.

How to Care For the Patinated Coin

This coin is finished with a clear lacquer that protects the hand-applied patina. Therefore, never polish the coin with metal cleaners! You would destroy not only the protective lacquer but also the antique patina and thus the unique appearance of the coin. For normal cleaning of dust or dirt, it is sufficient to gently wipe the coin with a dry or only slightly damp soft cloth.
