Brass Mouthpiece for Signal and Hunting Horn

How to Use the Mouthpiece

The mouthpiece is the part of the horn you blow into. Place your lips against one of the openings, tense them, and blow to make the column of air inside the entire horn vibrate. For installation, you need a prepared ox horn with a hole drilled at its narrow end. The mouthpiece is inserted into this hole. Depending on the diameter of the hole in your horn, you may need to secure or seal the mouthpiece further (for example, with beeswax or glue) to ensure a firm, airtight connection for the best possible sound.

From the History of Signal Horns

Animal horns, especially from aurochs, bison, or rams, are among the oldest wind instruments known to humanity. Since prehistoric times, they were used for long-distance communication, calling tribal gatherings, or warning of danger. In the Middle Ages, the signal horn became an indispensable piece of equipment for guards on ramparts, military units, and hunting parties. The metal mouthpiece represents a historical improvement—compared to simply blowing into a drilled hole, it allows the player much better control over the tone and makes sound production easier.

A Tidbit from Norse Mythology

One of the most famous mythological horns is the Gjallarhorn, belonging to the Norse god Heimdall, the guardian of the Bifröst bridge. Its sound was said to be heard throughout the world, and its blast was to announce the beginning of the final battle—Ragnarök. While you won't be heralding the end of the world with your horn, you'll certainly be the center of attention at a gathering of friends!

How to Care for Your Mouthpiece

To ensure your mouthpiece serves you well for a long time and retains its golden shine, it needs proper care.

  • Cleaning: For hygiene reasons, we recommend cleaning the mouthpiece after each intensive use. Rinse it with warm water, possibly with a drop of mild soap, and immediately dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.
  • Polishing: Brass naturally oxidizes over time and develops a darker patina. If you want to restore its original luster, use a commercial brass polishing paste and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • What to Avoid: Never wash the mouthpiece in a dishwasher. The hot water and aggressive chemicals would permanently damage its surface. Also, do not use steel wool or other abrasive materials that would scratch the brass.
