Medieval Linen Kirtle with Front Lacing – Blue

Authentic Design and Construction

This gown features a classic fitted bodice with a front lace-up closure. This practical design allows you to dress yourself easily and adjust the fit to your liking. The lacing is reinforced with hand-bound style eyelets and comes with a strong cotton cord tipped with metal aiglets, adding a touch of medieval craftsmanship and durability.

The skirt is constructed with gored side panels, a traditional tailoring method that adds natural volume and flare from the waist down, allowing for graceful movement without excessive bulk. The dress features half sleeves, which were very common in the High and Late Middle Ages. Half sleeves are practical for daily tasks and allow you to show off your linen chemise (underdress) or attach fashionable tippets.

Material and Care

Linen was the fabric of choice for medieval clothing due to its strength and ability to wick moisture away from the body. To maintain the quality of your linen dress:

  • Machine wash at 40°C (104°F) on a gentle cycle.
  • Do not bleach or tumble dry. Hang drying is recommended.
  • Iron on a warm setting for the best results.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve the blue colour.

Historical Context

The kirtle was worn by women of all social classes across Europe from the 13th to the 15th centuries. It functions perfectly as a main dress for a middle-class portrayal or as a supportive layer under a more elaborate surcoat for a noble impression. Pair it with a belt, a pouch, and a head covering to complete your look.

Please Note: This product includes the blue half-sleeve dress only. The long cream-coloured sleeves visible in the photos belong to an underdress (chemise) worn underneath, which is not included. Other accessories such as the hood and belt are also sold separately.
