History and Use of the Sleeveless Pourpoint
Sleeveless pourpoints, also known as arming vests or arming jacks, appear in the late 15th century. They served as a garment to which the wearer could attach parts of their armour, without adding the extra bulk of sleeves under plate armour.
Function in Armour
Clothing in the 15th century consisted of multiple layers, and reducing sleeve bulk helped to increase comfort and arm mobility, especially when wearing plate armour. For example, hose could be attached to this pourpoint using laces threaded through eyelets at the waist.
Modern Use and Layering
Today, this type of garment is popular as an alternative to a doublet, being more suitable for warmer weather. Our reproduction is designed with this in mind. It is a fitted, fashionable garment. Worn over a shirt, it makes a comfortable garment for camp chores. For a more distinguished look, you can wear an overgarment, such as a coat, houppelande, or gown, on top.
Material: 100% Recycled Wool and Cotton Lining
This pourpoint is made from 100% recycled blue wool and lined with 100% blue cotton for added comfort.
Advantages of Recycled Wool
This is a sturdy, somewhat coarser, and warm material that is an excellent alternative to new wool. Recycling wool conserves natural resources and reduces textile waste. Such material has a lower environmental impact, as its processing consumes less energy and water than new wool. Additionally, wool possesses many excellent properties:
- Natural Insulator: Wool fibres trap air, helping you to stay warm.
- Breathability: It keeps you warm without causing overheating.
- Warm Even When Wet: Wool provides warmth even when damp and can repel water.
- Moisture Absorption: It can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water before you start to feel damp.
- Durability: It is a long-lasting fabric.
- Flame Resistance: Wool is naturally flame-resistant, making it safer to wear around campfires.
Constructional Features
This pourpoint is designed as a close-fitting, fashionable garment. It features seven pairs of eyelets around the waist and two pairs of eyelets for attaching hose. It closes at the front with ties and lacing.
