While classic chain handcuffs brought a massive revolution in the speed of restraining suspects at the beginning of the 20th century, as time passed and the safety demands of responding officers increased, it became necessary to further improve the system. A chain still allows the detainee a certain degree of wrist rotation, which can facilitate attempts to unlock the mechanism with a concealed object or create dangerous leverage against the ratchets. For this reason, hinged handcuffs were developed. Three massive steel pins and a wide joint restrict the movement of the hands to an absolute minimum, providing the arresting officer with far better control over the suspect's body. The black finish became a standard for SWAT teams and special units during the 1980s to minimize unwanted light reflections.

Proper Use and Maintenance of High-Carbon Steel

These handcuffs are equipped with an advanced double lock system (Double Lock). Once applied to the wrist and ratcheted to the desired position, the mechanism is securely locked by pressing the small pin on the edge of the cuff using the spike on the back of the provided key. The pawl drops into place, and the handcuffs can no longer be tightened, which verifiably protects the detained person from loss of circulation or fatal nerve damage. To unlock, you must first turn the key in one direction to disengage the double lock, and then in the opposite direction to open the jaw itself. The K70 steel used is a highly tough spring steel with a higher carbon content. To maintain the smooth operation of the hinge and protect against corrosion, we strongly recommend regularly treating the moving parts, pins, and keyhole with a drop of high-quality gun oil.
