In 1912, inventor George Carney patented a mechanism with a swinging bow (the swing-through design), which allowed handcuffs to be applied quickly and smoothly with just one hand. Proper Use and Steel Maintenance Tips

These handcuffs are equipped with a Double Lock system. Once applied to the wrist and ratcheted to the desired position, the mechanism is secured by pressing the small pin on the edge of the cuff using the spike on the back of the provided key. This blocks the ratchet mechanism, preventing the handcuffs from tightening any further, which protects the detained person from loss of circulation or nerve damage. To unlock, you must first turn the key in one direction (to disengage the double lock) and then in the opposite direction (to open the cuff completely).
