A Historically Inspired Shirt for Many Characters

This medieval lace-up shirt is not a reproduction of one surviving historical garment. Its uncomplicated construction and generous silhouette draw broadly on the tradition of long tunics and undergarments worn in medieval Europe. Functionally, it is particularly reminiscent of clothing from the High Middle Ages, especially the 12th and 13th centuries. The laced neckline and adjustable sleeves, however, should be understood as versatile historical-style details intended primarily for LARP, fantasy and less strictly source-based reenactment.

For a tightly documented Viking or medieval impression, bear in mind that linen was particularly important for next-to-skin garments in northern and western Europe. The cotton used for this model is chiefly a practical modern choice. It is soft, absorbent, easy to care for and lightweight enough to remain comfortable during warmer festivals and extended wear.

Made in Honour of William of Rubruck

The shirt takes its name from William of Rubruck, a Flemish Franciscan and one of the remarkable European travellers of the 13th century. In 1253 he set out on an extraordinary journey across the Black Sea steppes towards the court of the Mongol Great Khan Möngke and later recorded his experiences in a detailed travel account. His long journey makes him a fitting namesake for this versatile adventurer's shirt, which is made in his honour.

Roomy Construction and Practical Details

The body has a deliberately full cut, allowing this men's medieval shirt to move freely around the chest and shoulders and making it easy to combine with additional layers. The long, broad sleeves provide ample room for natural arm movement, while the construction around the shoulders adds further ease.

Drawcord ties allow the sleeves to be gathered at the wrists when required. The neckline has a low standing band with a short front opening secured by textile cords. Additional crossed lacing on the chest reinforces the rustic appearance associated with a LARP shirt, Viking-style shirt or medieval costume shirt.

How to Wear the Shirt

We recommend washing the garment according to the care instructions before its first use. Loosen the neckline ties before pulling the shirt over your head, then adjust them until the opening sits comfortably. Gather the sleeves at the wrists only enough to keep excess fabric under control without restricting circulation or hand movement. The shirt can hang loose or be gathered at the waist with a leather belt.

Its deliberately neutral design works well for a medieval traveller, craftsman, villager, sailor, mercenary or adventurer as well as numerous fantasy roles. It can also form the basis of a Renaissance or pirate costume. Beneath costume armour it serves as a lightweight textile base layer, but it does not replace a padded gambeson or any form of protective equipment.

This medieval shirt for men is intentionally cut very generously. Before ordering, we recommend comparing the stated measurements with a loose-fitting shirt or tunic that already fits you well. Allow additional room if you intend to combine it with several costume layers.

Care Instructions

• Machine wash at a maximum of 40°C / 104°F with similar colours.
• Loosen the ties before washing to reduce unnecessary strain on the cords.
• Do not use chlorine bleach or other aggressive bleaching agents.
• Tumble dry on low heat; air drying is gentler and can extend the life of the fabric.
• Iron on a low setting if required.
• Cotton may shrink when exposed to excessive heat, so avoid unnecessarily hot washing and drying.

Safe Use

• This shirt is clothing rather than protective equipment and offers no protection from impacts, cuts or heat.
• During LARP or stage combat, secure loose cords so that they cannot catch on weapons or equipment.
• When wearing the shirt beneath armour, position knots where rigid armour components will not press directly against them.
• Keep the cotton fabric away from open flames, sparks and hot objects.
• Repair damaged cords or seams before further use.
