History and Craftsmanship Legacy

The Bon Couteau (translated as "Good Knife") draws inspiration from traditional French pocket knives of the 19th century. On the handle, you may notice six rivets forming a cross symbol. This tradition, known as the shepherd's cross, dates back to times when shepherds in the fields would stick their knife into a loaf of bread to serve as a small altar for prayer. The decoration of the spring spine, called guilloché or file work, has always been the hallmark of a master bladesmith, setting quality tools apart from mass production. This knife is a perfect accessory for gentlemen and civil life re-enactors of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Care and Safety Instructions

Ebony wood is a natural material that deserves your care. To prevent the handle from cracking and to maintain its deep color, occasionally wipe it with a cloth and a drop of linseed or mineral oil. Keep the blade sharp and always wash and dry it after contact with acidic substances (e.g., lemon juice). Warning: Since the knife does not have a mechanical lock but only a strong back spring (slipjoint), never use it for stabbing or heavy prying. The blade could fold onto your fingers. Always use it only for slicing and cutting away from your body. We recommend purchasing a high-quality leather belt pouch to ensure your ebony aristocrat remains safe and close at hand.
