Chainmail Riveting Pliers for Round Rivets, 9 mm

The Key to Perfect Chainmail

At first glance, these pliers impress with their robust, artisanal appearance and a natural finish that evokes the feel of a hand-forged tool. This is not a complex mechanism, but a simple and effective lever tool whose genius lies in the design of its jaws. One jaw is flat, while the other features a small hemispherical dimple. This specific shape is key to perfectly peening and forming the second head of a round rivet. The long handles provide ample leverage and control over the tool during work.

How to Use It: A Practical Guide

Using these pliers is easier than it might seem. You will need a small anvil or another hard, flat steel surface.

  1. First, prepare your ring and rivet. Overlap the ends of the ring so that the rivet holes align.
  2. Push the rivet through the holes.
  3. Place the ring on the anvil so that the factory head of the rivet is resting on the surface.
  4. Position the pliers on the rivet shank protruding from the ring – place the jaw with the dimple onto the end of the rivet.
  5. With gentle but firm taps of a hammer on the top (flat) jaw of the pliers, form the second rivet head. The dimple in the jaw will ensure its correct round shape.
  6. Repeat until all your rings are securely riveted!

Warning: Always wear safety glasses when working with a hammer and metal tools!

Riveting Through the Ages

For centuries, chainmail armour was the dominant form of personal protection for warriors. Its effectiveness, however, depended critically on how the individual rings were joined. While simple butted mail offered only limited protection and could easily be forced open on impact, riveted mail represented the pinnacle of technology of its time. Each ring was closed with a tiny rivet, creating an incredibly strong and durable mesh that could withstand both cuts and thrusts. The production of such armour was extremely laborious and required not only skill but also specialised tools, similar to these pliers. Owning a high-quality set of riveted mail was a sign of status and wealth.

Care and Maintenance

The pliers are made from mild steel and have a natural finish. To ensure they serve you for as long as possible and remain free of rust, it's important to keep them dry. After each use, clean off any metal dust and lightly coat them with oil (e.g., WD-40 or another conservation oil). Store them in a dry place, away from moisture. Never leave them outside in the rain or in a damp workshop.
