Traditional Katana Handle Tsuka with Genuine Rayskin and Black Silk

History and Anatomy of the Samurai Sword Handle

The handle (tsuka) was literally the vital link between the samurai and his weapon. Its construction has been perfected over centuries. The foundation of this product is a solid wood core (ho), flanked on both sides by panels of genuine ray skin (samegawa). Historically, ray skin was prized for its extreme durability and unique nodular texture, which prevented the wrapping from slipping even when the warrior's hands were slick with sweat or blood.

Tightly bound over the skin is the traditional diamond-patterned wrap (tsuka-ito) made of black silk. Concealed beneath the wrap on both sides are metal ornaments called menuki. In history, these served not merely as decorations, but helped properly position the fingers for an optimal grip. The ends of the handle are reinforced with cast iron fittings – the collar (fuchi) near the guard and the pommel cap (kashira) at the very end.

How to Properly Mount the Tsuka

This handle is supplied without pre-drilled holes for the retaining pegs (mekugi-ana). This is standard practice because every sword tang (nakago) has its hole placed slightly differently. To mount it correctly, follow these steps:

  • Carefully slide the handle onto your blade's tang until it sits flush against the guard (tsuba).
  • Accurately measure the position of the hole on the tang relative to the handle's wooden core.
  • Drill the holes through the handle so they perfectly align with the hole in the steel.
  • Insert bamboo or horn pegs (mekugi) to securely lock the blade within the handle.

Safety Guidelines and Maintenance

If you plan to mount this handle on a sharp blade for cutting practice (tameshigiri) or martial arts, remember that safety comes first. The installation must be absolutely precise. If the retaining pegs are loose, there is a severe risk of the blade flying out of the handle, which can cause fatal injuries to yourself or bystanders. If you are not confident in mounting it, entrust the task to an experienced swordsmith. To ensure longevity, protect the handle from excessive moisture. You can gently clean the silk wrap with a soft brush, and it is advisable to lightly coat the iron parts (fuchi and kashira) with conservation oil occasionally to prevent surface rust.
