Functional Viking Signal Horn "Gjallarhorn" from Real Buffalo Horn

Appearance and Craftsmanship

This signal horn is made from carefully selected, ethically sourced real buffalo horn. Each piece is unique, with a one-of-a-kind grain and colour transitions, typically ranging through dark shades of black and brown with occasional lighter veins. The surface of the horn is thoroughly polished to give it a beautiful shine and a pleasant feel. For easy and loud blowing, a brass mouthpiece is fitted to the narrow end. A durable black cord is attached to the horn via two metal eyelets for comfortable carrying over the shoulder.

Gjallarhorn – The Horn that Heralds Ragnarök

War and signal horns have been used for millennia across various cultures. Their purpose was not only to call armies to the battlefield but also to communicate during hunts or to announce important events. In Norse mythology, the Gjallarhorn ("loudly sounding horn") holds special significance. According to legend, it is owned by the god Heimdall, guardian of the gods, who will sound it to summon the other gods to battle at the onset of Ragnarök. Its call can be heard throughout the Nine Worlds. With this horn, you can, at least for a moment, feel what it's like to be a proud Viking warrior or even Heimdall himself!

How to Properly Use and Care for Your Horn

Blowing a signal horn is easier than it looks. Place the brass mouthpiece to your lips, press them firmly together, and blow as if you were trying to create a buzzing sound. By varying the pressure of your lips and the force of your breath, you can achieve different tones. To maintain the horn's beauty and functionality, follow these guidelines:

  • Never use the horn for drinking! It is purely a signal instrument and is not treated on the inside for contact with beverages.
  • Wipe it with a soft cloth after use to remove any dirt.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or humidity to prevent it from cracking.
  • To maintain its shine, you can occasionally treat the horn with beeswax or a natural oil.
