Renaissance Katzbalger Sword with Scabbard, Sharp Blade
Symbol of the Elite German Mercenaries
The Katzbalger was the iconic sidearm of the Landsknechts, the German mercenaries who dominated European battlefields in the 15th and 16th centuries. While they used long pikes or two-handed swords (Flamberge) in the front line to break enemy ranks, the Katzbalger was employed when the battle turned into a chaotic crush—often referred to as "cat-fighting" (likely the origin of the name, from the German Katzbalgen). Thanks to its short length and robust construction, it was ideal for close-quarters combat where long weapons lost their effectiveness. It was carried by everyone from pikemen to arquebusiers and became a symbol of their professional honour.
Craftsmanship and Details
This replica stands out for its precise workmanship. The wooden grip features fine fluting that transitions seamlessly into the steel pommel, creating a visually unified whole. The dominant feature of the sword is the S-shaped guard, twisted into a figure-8, which is typical for this type of weapon. Its spiral metalwork terminates in decorative half-spheres. The blade, made of 1075 high carbon steel, is tempered and adorned with three fullers that lighten the blade without sacrificing strength.
Included with the sword is a black leather scabbard with decorative criss-cross braiding and a unique steel chape, which protects the sword tip and completes the historical look.
Usage and Safety
Since the blade of this sword is supplied sharpened, increased caution is required:
- Cutting Drills: Thanks to the material and edge, the sword is suitable for test cutting on soft targets (tatami mats, plastic bottles).
- Historical Fencing (HEMA/Re-enactment): Warning! This sword is not intended for contact fencing against another person (free play, sparring). The sharp blade would cause serious or fatal injuries and destroy an opponent's equipment.
- Costume Use: If you wear the sword as part of a costume at public events, ensure it is secured in the scabbard (peace-tied) to prevent accidental drawing and to ensure the safety of those around you.
Care Instructions
To ensure your sword serves you well for many years, it requires regular maintenance. The 1075 steel is not stainless. Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after every touch with bare hands or after use, and preserve it with quality oil (e.g., gun oil or WD-40). You can treat the wooden grip with linseed oil or beeswax. Keep the leather of the scabbard supple with appropriate leather care products. Avoid striking hard objects (stone, concrete, thick branches) which could damage the edge.
We recommend pairing this sword with a period-correct Landsknecht dagger or a doublet to enhance the authenticity of your attire.
