Viking Hand-Forged Fire Steel, 10th Century Style, C-Shaped Striker

An Essential Tool from the Viking Age

In the 10th century, at the height of Viking expansion, fire was the foundation of life. Whether on a long voyage on a drakkar, in the harsh environment of a newly settled land, or in the heat of a military campaign, the ability to make fire quickly and reliably was crucial. A fire steel like this was part of the personal kit of every man and woman. It was carried in a leather pouch on the belt, along with a piece of flint and tinder. Its compact yet solid construction ensured it could withstand the harshest treatment and would always be ready to provide life-giving sparks for warmth, light, and cooking.

Master the Art of Viking Fire-Making

Creating fire with a flint and steel is a skill that requires practice but brings immense satisfaction. The process is as follows:

  1. Prepare your gear: This fire steel, a sharp piece of flint, and high-quality tinder (e.g., char cloth, amadou fungus).
  2. A firm grip: Grasp the fire steel in a closed fist as shown in the photo—your fingers pass through its centre. Take the flint in your other hand.
  3. Ready the tinder: Place a piece of tinder on the top surface of the flint, very close to the sharp edge you will strike against.
  4. Strike: Deliver a swift, forceful strike with the fire steel downwards along the edge of the flint. The goal is to "shave" as many sparks as possible from the steel.
  5. Nurture the spark: As soon as a spark lands on the tinder and begins to glow, blow on it gently until the ember spreads.
  6. Build the fire: Transfer the glowing tinder to a nest of dry natural material (grass, down) and blow it into a flame.

Remember: Patience and practice are the keys to success. Every failed attempt brings you closer to mastery!

Caring for Your Viking Steel

Your fire steel is made from honest carbon steel, not modern stainless steel. This is what makes it excellent at throwing sparks, but it also makes it prone to rust.

Rust Never Sleeps

Always keep your fire steel dry. After use, especially in damp weather, wipe it down carefully. To protect it during long-term storage, lightly coat it with a layer of oil (mineral, gun, or even cooking oil will do). This will ensure it's always ready to serve the next time you need it.
