Symbolism of Gold and Steel

While the common foot soldier wore a plain iron Morion, this version is a celebration of craftsmanship and status. The helmet bowl and its high comb are covered with detailed floral engravings (etching), which contrast beautifully with the polished metal surface. However, what makes this model truly unique are the gold-plated details. Gold floral rosettes (rivets) are placed along the brim, giving the helmet a regal appearance. On the back, there is a plume holder for inserting colourful feathers, which was a popular fashion in the Renaissance to emphasize a commander's individuality.

Historical Context

The Morion became an icon of European armies during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was made famous primarily by Spanish conquerors (conquistadors) such as Hernán Cortés or Francisco Pizarro during their expeditions to the New World. Thanks to its shape, which deflected blows from above well and did not obstruct vision, it was popular with infantry throughout Europe, including the English New Model Army. Today, it is still worn during ceremonies by the Pontifical Swiss Guard in the Vatican.

Warning: A Jewel, Not Protective Gear

It is important to remember that this Morion is strictly a decorative item. • Cleaning: Remove dust with a soft brush or a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could rub off the gold plating or scratch the polished surface.
• Preservation: You can gently treat the steel parts with preservation oil, but proceed carefully around the gold-plated elements.
